Austrian Post’s largest e-fleet continues to grow before Christmas

Austrian Post recently put its 6,000th e-vehicle into operation. It is a Fiat e-Scudo, which will be used in Vienna as part of the switch to completely electric delivery. The achievement of the 6,000th e-vehicle was celebrated together with Minister of Economic Affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig, Swiss Post CEO Walter Oblin and Deputy Director General Peter Umundum, Member of the Board of Management for Parcel & Logistics.

Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism: “The logistics industry is under massive pressure to change throughout Europe – many postal companies are struggling with rising costs, high parcel volumes and the necessary ecological restructuring. It is therefore all the more remarkable that Austrian Post is setting a new milestone in this environment with 6,000 electric vehicles. As a state-owned company, Swiss Post is thus showing that it is taking responsibility for a strong business location – and for the common goal of working together for the upswing.”

Michael Ludwig, Mayor of the City of Vienna: “For years, Vienna has stood for climate protection, a high quality of life and a strong business location. The fact that Swiss Post is now putting its 6,000th e-vehicle into operation in our city is a strong signal: modern mobility makes Vienna cleaner, quieter and even more livable. I would like to thank all those involved who are consistently pursuing this path and thus making an important contribution to sustainable and economically viable development.”

Walter Oblin, CEO of Österreichische Post AG: “With 6,000 electric vehicles, we are sending a strong signal for the reduction of emissions in the logistics industry. For us, electromobility is not a trend, but a central component of our strategy to make deliveries on the last mile entirely on foot, by bicycle or e-vehicle by 2030. In this way, we are making a contribution to climate protection and showing how ecological responsibility and economic efficiency can go hand in hand.”

Peter Umundum, Deputy Director General, Member of the Management Board for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG: “The switch to e-mobility has long been part of everyday life for Swiss Post. With new e-vehicles and intelligent charging solutions at our locations or at home, we ensure that 6,000 delivery drivers are reliable and electrically on the road even in the high season. In this way, we not only bring Christmas gifts to their destination on time, but also without direct emissions.”

The Fiat e-Scudo panel van XL is equipped with a 75 kWh battery and has a range of up to 350 kilometres according to WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure). The cargo space has a load volume of 6.6 m³. The Swiss Post equipment variant also has air conditioning, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a reversing camera with parking sensors and enhanced load compartment lighting with LEDs.

SMART CHARGING SOLUTIONS: CHARGE@HOME AND PHOTOVOLTAICS
Austrian Post not only purchases around 1,000 additional e-vehicles per year, but also invests in intelligent charging solutions and the expansion of its photovoltaic capacity.

In addition to charging in logistics centres or delivery bases, around 450 delivery drivers are already taking advantage of the opportunity to drive their e-vehicle home and charge it there. For this purpose, Swiss Post provides them with an intelligent charging unit that records the charging processes and automatically transmits them to the company for billing. The charged electricity is thus automatically refunded at the next payroll. The prerequisite for this is an electricity tariff that guarantees renewable energies from Austria.

The majority of the e-fleet is still charged via Swiss Post’s charging infrastructure. This now includes 34 locations throughout Austria with photovoltaic systems, which together achieve an output of around 20 megawatt peak (MWp). The share of self-sufficiency in electricity from Swiss Post’s own photovoltaic systems thus amounts to more than 20 percent on the balance sheet. Only electricity from Austrian renewable energy sources is purchased.

MILESTONES OF THE POST-E FLEET SINCE 2010
Swiss Post’s e-fleet is not only by far the largest in Austria, it has continued to grow by around 1,000 e-vehicles annually since 2023. By 2030, Swiss Post has set itself the goal of making deliveries throughout Austria only on foot, by e-bikes, e-mopeds or e-vehicles. The most important milestones of the past years were:

  • 2010: Use of the first e-bikes and e-mopeds in delivery
  • 2011: Use of the first e-cars in delivery
  • 2012: Swiss Post now only purchases electricity from renewable energy sources
  • 2016: 1,000 electric vehicles in use
