TNT delivers more than 100 new jobs for North-West
A new GBP5.6 million depot built for Britain’s leading business-to-business express delivery company is set to create more than 100 new jobs for the Merseyside region.
Express delivery giant TNT is currently putting the finishing touches to the new depot in Hale Road, Speke, at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which will handle domestic parcels for the North-West of England as well as international consignments to and from mainland Europe and further afield.
Employing approximately 110 people, the 56-bay depot on the 4.13-acre site is projected to handle almost three million domestic collections and deliveries a year, while the international side expects approximately half a million a year.
The air gateway is scheduled to go operational in the first week of 2007. The new facility will be handling parcels and packages for UK destinations by February, and will be offering full national and international services by April.
Businesses throughout the North-West will now be able to take advantage of the depot’s leading edge technology, including a ‘dolly train’ system for the quickest loading and unloading of TNT aircraft. The installation of new straight line conveyor equipment, roller beds and the essential office equipment is scheduled to be installed before Christmas
Peter Lascelles is the new Depot General Manager and assumes responsibility for the new Liverpool location as well as TNT’s Manchester International Depot at Trafford Park.
Peter said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to grow the business in the region and a great opportunity to boost the local economy with the 100 new jobs and all that brings with it.
“This new Liverpool depot serves a dual functionality in that it will be a depot and an air gateway. This gives us the necessary presence in the area to really grow the international side of the business.
“We start at a base of 44 rounds for our international vehicles and really hoping to capitalise on this and let things literally take-off.”
TNT has the building under a 20-year lease from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, and airport bosses have incorporated extra space into the design of the building, should TNT require it in the future.
Peter, who will be based at the new Liverpool depot, added: “We’re really going to attack the areas where we think we can move the business forward – in particular, the automotive suppliers in the North-West and businesses in the city centre of Liverpool. The potential is there to really grow the business – it’s just a matter of going for it.”
