LONDON – Britain’s Post Office said today it is changing its name to Consignia to reflect its widening operations.
The Royal Mail and Parcelforce delivery brands will not be affected by the name change, and the Post Office branches will also remain.
“The new name describes the full scope of what the Post Office does in a way that the words “post” and “office” cannot,” said John Roberts, chief executive of the state-owned postal authority.
The new corporate name, which will take effect on March 26, also reflects the government’s decision to give the Post Office more control over commercial decisions, including the power to borrow more and invest in new services.
Roberts said the new name will be seen mainly by corporate customers in advertising, utilities, financial services, home shopping and telecommunications, which together account for a third of the company’s annual $11.25 billion revenue.
The Dutch postal authority changed its name to TPG after its acquisition of TNT, the air express carrier, and Deutsche Post World Net, the German mail, express and logistics giant, is widely expected to shorten its name eventually to World Net to reflect its global status.
