Royal Mail bids to speed up deliveries
The Royal Mail is hoping to relieve the increasing burden on its
delivery staff in Loughborough. The company has applied for planning
permission to install 32 boxes
to house mail prior to its delivery at sites throughout the town. A
spokesman said: “The 150 staff based at the Loughborough sorting
office deliver a weekly average of 750,000 letters to 27,000
addresses in Loughborough. “That represents 80,000 more than were
delivered three years ago.
“Regulations state the maximum weight that should be carried by a
postal worker at one time is 16 kilogrammes, just over 30 pounds. “Locked
postal pouch boxes at key points along a round will speed up
deliveries by enabling workers to pick up more mail along the way,
without returning to the sorting office to collect it.” The boxes measure
two feet high by 18 inches wide and are usually
painted grey, although colours can be varied to fit into sensitive
areas.
