DHL opens Argentina terminal

DHL Worldwide Express has opened an $11 million terminal in Buenos Aires, increasing its total investment in Argentina to $40 million.

DHL said the terminal is the largest express delivery center in Latin America.

In 2000, the carrier’s traffic into and out of the country totaled approximately 1.5 million parcels. It plans to invest some $20 million in 2001 to develop its business in the local market.

DHL controls 35% of the sector’s local market, followed by Federal Express with 27%, according to Norberto Lovaglio, president of DHL’s operation in Argentina, which employs 300 people there.

The company reportedly had $300 million in revenue in Latin America last year. Some $50 million of that total was generated by Brazil, and $30 million by Argentina.
