DHL top climate league

Despite the economic downturn and recent round of layoffs, DHL is affirming its green leadership among top shipping companies for the second year in a row.

Climate Counts has just ranked DHL number one in climate performance, on a 0-to-100 point scale, with a score of 67 points – up from 45 in last year’s ranking. FedEx flowed closely with 53 points, the USPS earned 50, while UPS was up 1 point from last year with a score of 40 points. Based on 22 criteria, such as carbon footprint, pollution reduction, and green legislation support, Climate Counts, which also ranks Internet, technology, and financial firms, concluded that DHL and FedEx made the biggest improvements in offering customers a way to “ship green”.

“This is great news for holiday shoppers looking to make their gift-giving as green as possible this year and an indication of what hope to continue to see from the shipping sector,” said Wood Turner, project director of Climate Counts. “It certainly contrasts with the fast-food sector, which continues to lag in meaningful efforts to address global warming and energy conservation. Hopefully, the shipping sector’s progress will be an example to others.”
