Australia Post is applying to raise the price of a normal postage stamp to 60 cents, reports ABC.

The article continues:

Last year the ACCC granted approval for a 5 cent increase on Australian stamps to 55 cents, the first price rise since 2003.

Australia Post spokeswoman Elizabeth Rich says increasing costs for labour and transport need to be met.

“We have around 200,000 new addresses, or roughly the size of Wollongong being added to our mail network every year, and escalating costs just like any other business,” she said.

“So the combination of those two factors is why we are asking the ACCC for a price rise.”

ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel has told ABC Newsradio the commission will carefully consider the application.

“We really examine all the relevant issues the financial and economic issues to determine whether or not its an appropriate increase,” he said.

“That’s a matter, then, that is referred to the minister – I think in this case it’s [Communications] Minister Stephen Conroy – and he makes the final adjudication.”
