UPS cuts jobs in Ireland
Package delivery giant UPS is to close its call centre in Tallaght, Ireland, with the loss of around 200 jobs, reports RTE. In a statement UPS said it would close the operation by 31 May of next year.
Some 60 employees will be offered positions in other UPS operations in the Dublin area, but the rest will be phased out, starting in October.
The centre is responsible for answering inquiries from UPS customers in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, parts of Switzerland, and parts of the UK.
UPS said it was a ‘very difficult decision’ to make, but a lack of the required language skills in Ireland forced it to recruit foreign workers and relocate them here.
The company said these workers usually return home after a short period of time. It added that the high turnover of staff has driven up costs at the facility.
In its statement, the company said it recognised the hard work of the employees in Tallaght and would be offering a redundancy package ‘significantly in excess of statutory requirements’.
UPS said this decision will have no effect on its other operations here and that Ireland will ‘remain an important market for the company’.
