Australia Post managing director to retire
Australia Post Chairman David Mortimer announced that Managing Director Graeme John will retire in December, after 20 years with the corporation and over 16 years as its chief executive. The chairman praised Mr John’s 20 years of service and his role in “one of the great success stories of corporate Australia”.
Mr John said it was with a combination of sadness, satisfaction and immense gratitude that he announced his decision.
Since joining Australia Post as chief manager national operations in 1990 and being appointed managing director in 1993, Mr John has overseen one of the largest transformations in Australia’s corporate history.
During this time, Australia Post completely restructured its letters and parcels networks, transformed its loss-making retail network to become profitable and sales-oriented, delivered consistently strong financial results, established a range of international and domestic joint ventures and alliances, and achieved solid productivity growth.
Mr John said he was proud of what had been achieved in the past 20 years at Australia Post.
Mr Mortimer said that an extensive recruitment process is underway. From October, Mr John will advise the board on strategic issues, continue his work with Australia Post’s international alliances and partnerships, and visit staff and customers around the country to thank them for their commitment and personal support.
From this time, Jim Marshall, general manager mail & networks, will become Australia Post’s chief operating officer, taking over day-to-day management of the business. On Mr John’s retirement, Mr Marshall will become the acting managing director, pending the permanent appointment of a chief executive.
