US Postal Service tests encryption system
The US Postal Service is testing a smart-card-based ‘certified e-mail’ system aimed at protecting the privacy of mail called NetPost.Certified mail is sent in encrypted form, stamped with a digital signature that shows the exact time it was sent to the recipient, the only person who can read the encrypted message. One obstacle to commercialization of the technology is that users would be obligated to prove their identities to avoid identity theft. Article describes the technology.
