Werner Muller, the German minister for the economy, has announced that the 2007 deadline for the ending of Deutsche Post’s monopoly for letter delivery could be shortened under certain conditions. If liberalisation of postal services within Europe makes significant progress over the coming years, the government may decide to speed the ending of the monopoly or, alternatively, lower the current limit of 200g for standard class letters and 50g for bulk volumes.
Muller stressed that the privatisation of postal services in Germany would only be undertaken in step with other European countries. So far there has be very little sign of an agreement on this matter among the member states, however. The extension granted to Deutsche Post on letters of up to 200g has been criticised by the CDU, FDP and even members of the Green party.
