However, the company has not yet closed a deal to buy the land, as Rensselaer County officials had said earlier on 14 January.
The FedEx Ground facility would be built on the site of the former manufacturing facilities of Albany International Corp., which have been vacant since 2007. The 73-acre site is on the market for $14.9m.
Rensselaer county executive Kathy Jimino told The Business Review that a developer working with FedEx had acquired the land. She said the developer-Scannell Properties, based in Indianapolis-applied for tax benefits from the county industrial development authority for the project.
A spokeswoman for FedEx said the company has not bought the land yet.
FedEx expects to close a deal for the property within 60 days. The company submitted an application to the town of East Greenbush last summer.
“There are definitely things in the works, but do we have a signed agreement? No,” said Allison Sobczak, a FedEx Ground spokeswoman.
FedEx plans to tear down the existing facilities at the old Albany International site and build a 300,000-square-foot distribution facility.
Sobczak said the company would roll current operations in Colonie and Guilderland into the new site. The Colonie and Guilderland sites combined employ 255 people.
Sobczak said FedEx Ground will have 425 people in East Greenbush within two years of when the new facility is completed.
