DHL IN TALKS WITH BALTIC POSTAL COMPANIES

DHL IN TALKS WITH BALTIC POSTAL COMPANIES
From BALTIC NEWS SERVICE, June 18th, 2001

The express delivery company DHL is holding cooperation talks with the postal companies of the Baltic states, Sweden, Norway and Poland, the Finnish business daily Kauppalehti reported citing Bill Blomquist, DHL’s top manager for the Nordic region. DHL already controls the international express delivery service of the postal companies of Finland and Denmark. With Finland’s postal
service a cooperation agreement was signed a year ago. Blomquist said that DHL’s competitor TNT was holding negotiations with the same partners. Manager of TNT David Burton has previously said TNT was in talks with six or seven postal companies and that TNT’s strategy was aimed at growth mainly in the Baltic Sea region and countries of eastern Europe. “Although we find the Baltic states and Poland to be very interesting, we aren’t ready to fight for them until our last breath,” Blomquist said. He said DHL’s advantages in competition were its agreements with Deutsche Post and knowledge of the market, as the company started business in the Baltics and Poland already a decade ago. TNT is owned by the Dutch TNT Post Group, Deutsche Post being the new owner of DHL. DHL’s international market share in express delivery service stands at about 38 percent and the company is much stronger in Europe than in the United States.
