Union to fight Canada Post outsourcing plans

A union representing 2,000 Canada Post employees says it will fight the Crown Corporation’s plan to privatise parts of its operations, reports The Canadian Press. The article continues:

The Public Service Alliance of Canada says Canada Post’s plan to outsource contact centres and the National Philatelic Centre will “badly damage” the quality of Canada’s postal service.

The plan would eliminate more than 300 jobs across the country.

Robyn Benson, the union’s regional executive vice-president for the Prairies, said the affected areas would lose local contact with Canada Post, as well as jobs.

Benson also said privatisation of the corporation’s answering services could compromise confidential information provided by Canadians.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada has 166,000 members.

Richard Deslauriers, national president of the Union of Postal and Communications Employees, says Canada Post is moving closer to “a complete privatisation.”
