DHL bolsters focus on chemical industry in AsPac

DHL is bolstering its focus on the growing chemical market, valued at EUR 1,644bn in 2008 globally. In anticipation of further growth in 2010, the company announced the appointment of Dr. David M.J. Foo as the new director of business development for DHL Global Forwarding’s chemicals business in the South Asia Pacific region.

DHL’s focus on the chemical sector, which encompasses the chemical, petrochemical, polymer, biofuels, life sciences and pharmaceutical fields, is timely as the market in Asia Pacific alone is estimated to be growing at 6% per annum. The industry produces over 70,000 product lines for nearly every industry – from food and beverage, paints, cosmetics, to industrial and agricultural goods – a testament to the sizeable market and huge revenue potential.

Amadou Diallo, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding, South Asia Pacific, said, “The chemical industry has grown significantly over the years, with an increased demand for chemical solutions logistics. In a market that’s already worth more than 3 billion euros in the Asia Pacific, customers are looking to their logistics provider for a one-stop solution and the chemicals sector presents key growth opportunities for DHL.”

DHL is strengthening its chemical solutions capabilities to meet anticipated industry growth and the increasingly sophisticated needs of customers in Asia Pacific.

Within Asia Pacific, DHL’s end-to-end logistics capabilities cover the complete chemical solutions supply chain from Lead Logistics Provider (LLP) to packaging, drumming and sample, and other special services such as oil and gas upstream solutions.

Reporting to Nick Revell, business development director for Life Sciences and Chemicals, Dr Foo will be responsible for developing the company’s growth plans as well as its chemical business network.

Revell said: “To capitalise on the growth potential, DHL’s plans to strengthen our presence within this sector are already well underway. These include investing in resources such as Chemical Specialists and warehousing facilities to hold chemicals requiring more careful handling, investments which David will oversee and drive forward while also identifying potential areas for future growth. He will also focus on extending our relationships with major customers in the US and Europe to the South Asia Pacific region, especially to target markets like India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.”
