Canada Post named one of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada

Canada Post has been chosen as one of Canada’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens for the second year in a row by Corporate Knights magazine. The corporation’s recognition is a testament to its dedication to social programmes, environmental initiatives and community involvement, said the company.

The annual list of Canada’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens is compiled by Corporate Knights, an independent company that publishes the world’s largest circulation magazine with an explicit focus on corporate responsibility. Corporate Knights compiles the Best 50 Corporate Citizens list using a ranking methodology that recognises companies concerned with long-term stakeholder value, and those with a true connection to the people and places they employ, affect and serve. Other factors include financial metrics, diversity in corporate leadership, and corporate management of taxes, pensions, labour relations, governance, and environmental and social concerns.

“From ensuring the health and safety of employees to raising money for charities, supporting Canadian communities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, our ultimate goal is to create a sustainable Canada Post that provides value to its customers, its employees and all Canadians,” said Phil Ventura, Canada Post’s senior vice-president of strategy. “We are proud that our corporate citizenship initiatives are being recognised again.”

Canada Post reduced lost-time accidents by 22% and raised $1.6m for mental health in 2009, and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 16% since 1990.

“Canada Post’s relatively strong board diversity, commitment to taking care of its employees through its fully funded pension plan, and strong environmental disclosure helped place it in the 2010 Best 50 Corporate Citizens,” said Toby Heaps, editor, Corporate Knights magazine.

Some of Canada Post’s other recent achievements include:

  • Raising $2.4m for United Way.
  • Exceeding delivery performance standards and the customer value index target.
  • Achieving the highest employee engagement score ever.
  • Registering 11 buildings for LEED certification in the last two years, including the new Winnipeg mail processing plant.
  • Reducing water consumption at head office by more than 40%.
  • Recording a profit for 15 consecutive years
  • Being named Most Iconic Brand in Canada by Brand Finance Canada.
  • Being selected as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, for the fourth year in a row, and as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, as announced in Maclean’s magazine.
