DHL to support Australia’s largest desalination plant

DHL Global Forwarding has been named the logistics partner for the Victoria Desalination Project in Australia. The company is now responsible for delivering approximately 60,000 revenue tonnes of material and equipment to construct Australia’s largest seawater desalination plant which will be built on the Bass Coast, near the town of Wonthaggi.

“To reach the milestones of this important project, we need to rely on the knowledge and reliability of our suppliers. DHL Global Forwarding demonstrated that they have the right experience and track record to contribute to the success of the project,” said Greg Miller, project director of Thiess Degrémont, design and construction contractor for the project.

DHL will be involved in the international transportation of all equipment, including customs and Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) clearance in Australia, domestic transportation and cargo tracking.

“DHL will be involved in the entire logistical process; from contacting suppliers, making bookings for transport, picking up goods, transporting goods to Melbourne, arranging customs clearance and delivering goods to site at Wonthaggi, 90 minutes south-east of Melbourne,” said Tony Boll, CEO – South Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding.

When finished, the plant will provide a rain independent potable water source for the State of Victoria that is capable of supplying up to one third of Melbourne’s annual water needs.

The desalination plant will be located in Wonthaggi on the Bass Coast. The $3.5bn project is on schedule for completion by the end of December 2011.
