Aramex deploys green scooters in Mumbai

Aramex has introduced 14 battery operated scooters to its growing fleet in Mumbai, India. The move forms part of the Middle-Eastern based company’s sustainability programme in the Asian country.

The scooters – which are ‘zero emission’ – will help Aramex reduce its carbon footprint in India.

Percy Avary, country head (India), Aramex, said: “Switching over to battery operated scooters within Mumbai is a pilot project which we plan to expand at a later stage, further demonstrating Aramex’s commitment to extending its corporate citizenship through its dedicated environmental initiatives.

“At Aramex, we remain committed to our long-term approach of becoming a carbon neutral company,” added Avary. “While this has always been a long-term goal for us, it is important that clear and tangible progress can be made on an annual basis.”

Aramex’s environmental practices, detailed within its 2009 Sustainability report, include migrating 78% of fleet to low emission vehicles, reducing fuel consumption by 21%, and converting all Aramex vehicles to unleaded fuel.

In July, Post&Parcel reported that The Department of Posts in India introduced solar power rickshaws. Running on solar batteries, the ‘Soleckshaw’ is pollution-free. Ten of the vehicles were trialled in Ajmer, with a national rollout being considered.
