VERDEX unveiled as Intermec looks to the future

Intermec reiterated the importance for the postal sector to embrace new technology, as the company unveiled its latest innovation, VERDEX, today. VERDEX is a real-time solution for enhanced data collection, nearly eliminating undeliverable address data.

The company hopes the product will help its clients to maximise overall ROI and improve customer satisfaction.

Speaking to Post&Parcel, Jeff Sibio, Intermec’s industry marketing director, transport and logistics, said: “Intermec places a huge amount of priority on new technologies. Whilst the mail volumes are going down, package volumes are going up.

“We also know there is huge importance for each country in the postal system to evolve – so it is vital to provide solutions like VERDEX to allow the industry to become more efficient and effective in their daily work.”

Concerning the roll-out of VERDEX, Sibio told Post&Parcel that Intermec is entering into pilots with several large companies across the world, whilst the product has the capability to be added to.

Intermec have been working on the development of VERDEX since February 2009.

Looking to the future, Sibio said Intermec is looking to expand its portfolio, bringing more industry-led whole solution components to the market.

VERDEX works by capturing an image of text-based information such as an address or forms data, using a handheld scanner and performs SmartMatch verification against a custom database of information.

After verification, the image goes through a cleansing process to provide instant address verification from the point of collection.

Commenting on the launch of the product, Larry Klimczyk, vice president of Intermec Global Solutions, said: “VERDEX offers mobile workers a breakthrough in mobile computing technology by empowering them to quickly and accurately extract and verify postal address information directly from their mobile computer at the point of collection.

“This capability combines the elimination of error prone manual data with never-before-seen downstream planning abilities, allowing not only increased efficiency but the accuracy enterprise-class customers require to enhance day-to-day operations.”

VERDEX was developed in partnership with RAF Technology, and utilises commercial or custom databases provided and maintained by the company.
