GLS improves capacity with new eco-depot
GLS has “significantly” improved distribution capacity in Germany by opening a new ‘eco-standard’ depot in Kürnach near Würzburg. The depot was built seven months ago and stands only 300 metres away from the previous building used by the European logistics provider.
Similar to GLS’s depots in Vaihingen-Enz and Bornheim, the eco-standard building is heated by a specialist pump, whilst rain water is cleansed in-house to provide drinking water.
Furthermore, the depot has been constructed from fully recyclable steel.
Klaus Conrad, managing director of GLS Germany, said that sustainability was at the heart of the depot’s construction and will play a central role in future operations at the plant.
He confirmed that the building cost EUR 5m.
The Kürnach depot houses approximately 105 employees and delivery drivers, boasts 81 loading/unloading areas, and has a two-line conveyor system and modern scanning equipment.
It has a floor space of 2,500 square meters and an average daily turnover of 18,000 packages – “significantly’ improving distribution capacity, the company said.
