FedEx applauded by The International Charter for sustainability
FedEx has received the Committed to the Environment award from The International Charter. The award symbolises FedEx’s “clear commitment to understanding its environmental impact”.
“We were very impressed with the efforts FedEx is making, in particular with regard to reducing conventional energy consumption, as well as using cleaner vehicles in their distribution fleet,” said Steve Fortes, director of International Charter. “FedEx is leading the way in understanding environmental impact and addressing it.”
The International Charter highlighted FedEx’s: deployment of hybrid technologies; its EarthSmart @ Work initiative; its vehicle efficiency (which has dropped by 14.1% since 2005); and it’s commitment to renewable energy programmes (doubling onsite solar generation to 3.92 MW).
Mitch Jackson, FedEx’s vice president of environment and sustainability, said: “FedEx is honoured to receive this award from The International Charter as we seek to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways.
“Through major goals, established in 2008, like seeking to increase our vehicle efficiency and reduce our aircraft emissions intensity by 20% by 2020, a wide range of team members can contribute to reducing our environmental impact while assisting our customers.”
Furthermore, FedEx said it has recently added all-electric delivery vehicles in Los Angeles and Paris to compliment the ones already operating in London and Washington, DC.
Building on its alternative energy use, this October the FedEx Cologne hub will go on-line with a new solar energy system. Between Cologne, the largest US solar rooftop installation in Woodbridge, New Jersey, and a number of solar-powered facilities in California, by the end of the year FedEx will create and use approximately 5 MW of renewable energy, or the carbon equivalent of over 440,000 gallons of gasoline never burned.
