TNT Post reduce number of compulsory redundancies

TNT Post will reduce the number of compulsory redundancies it will make as a part of its cost-cutting programme. Due to the difficult economic climate, e-substitution and increased competition, TNT had originally planned to lose up to 4,500 staff.

However, after liaising with the Dutch trade unions, TNT has said it will cut that figure.

The postal operator said the exact number to be offered a reprieve will be decided by a consultation with the works council.

A company statement said: “The unions recognise that TNT Post is forced to start making considerable cost savings. The proposals made by the unions for reducing the number of compulsory redundancies have been evaluated by TNT Post.

“TNT Post is prepared to meet the unions on important points in order to reduce the number of compulsory redundancies of 4500. The exact result will depend on consultations with the works council which are already underway.

“During these consultations, details of the reorganisation plans are being discussed. The works council has the right to be consulted on these matters.”

Despite agreeing to lower the number of compulsory redundancies, TNT Post said the inevitable lay-offs were “unavoidable”.

“Implementation of changes is unavoidable, however painful this may be for the large group of employees who have loyally served the company for many years and who are still actively delivering mail to the right address every day,” said the company.

The company’s ‘Master Plan’ savings already announced totalling €430m for the period 2010-2017 remain unchanged.
