The future of postal deliveries (Austria)

The supervisory board of Osterreichische Post AG, the Austrian postal service operator, decides today (07/08/01) upon the reduction of the company’s post office network. According to rumours, the management board will propose the closure of 712 out of a total of 2,300 post offices, with the cutting of around 20 per cent of a current 31,000 jobs by 2004 (i.e. around 6,000 job losses).

A reorganisation of distribution, also proposed by management, will also be discussed. Originally, the company planned to reduce the number of postal delivery offices from 1,900 to 450, but this plan was dropped following strong opposition among staff representatives.

Other points under discussion include the price band for the sale of advertising material distributor Feibra and strategies for acquisitions in eastern and south-eastern Europe.
