Post offices to close in Sydney

Australia Post is to close a number of post offices in Sydney early next year. Post offices in Woollahra, Glebe and Turramurra will definitely close, with a branch in Belconnen also in danger.

The move forms a part of Australia Post’s cost-cutting programme.

”As an organisation that doesn’t receive any taxpayer funding, it’s our responsibility to act according to commercially sound practices so we can continue to be financially self-sustaining,” said Australia Post spokesperson Lanie Harris.

The decision to close those specific stores was made due to availability of alternatives, Harris confirmed.

However, the move has been criticised by residents. Jan Wilson, from Glebe, told the Sydney Morning Herald: ”We have a retirement village right on the diagonal opposite corner. Many people, particularly pensioners, don’t have credit cards and they do all their banking at the local post office.”
