Canada Post shows off first all-electric step van
Canada Post is taking on four new all-electric step vans this month, to evaluate as part of its effort to improve the environmental credentials of its vehicle fleet. Following up on its purchase of fully-electric Ford Transit Connect small delivery vehicles, the Crown Corporation is taking on four eStar commercial vans.
Canada Post showcased its first eStar vehicle yesterday in Toronto.
Built by American manufacturer Navistar, Inc., the class 2c-3 electric truck has a payload of about two tones, as well as a range of about 100 miles on a single charge.
Its makers state it can be recharged within six to eight hours, although its cassette-type battery can be changed in 20 minutes, allowing almost round-the-clock operation.
The eStar is purpose built for electric power, unlike many other electric vehicles that are conversions of fossil fuel vehicle models. This gives the Navistar vehicle the competitive advantage of having its heavy battery mounted in a position that provides the vehicle with the best centre of gravity.
It also features a 36-foot turning radius and a low-floor design to allow easy loading and unloading.
But the all-important “green” aspect is its zero tailpipe emissions – using electricity from the grid means each eStar vehicle can cut carbon dioxide output by 10 tons a year, while the electric motor means the vehicle is virtually silent.
Deepak Chopra, Canada Post president and CEO said: “Our trucks are in every neighbourhood in the country everyday and we take pride in our efforts to deliver to our customers in an environmentally responsible way.”
Evaluation
Canada Post has the largest delivery fleet in Canada, with more than 7,300 vehicles covering 79m kilometers each year.
It is currently in the process of researching a variety of alternative vehicle technologies – including models powered by biofuels, natural gas, propane, hydrogen, electric and hybrid systems. The move aims to move the Canada Post fleet to a more sustainable option than gasoline, which is currently subject to high oil prices.
Chopra said: “Part of our environmental commitment is to evaluate and proceed with alternate fuel technologies that will offer us a return on investment.”
Navistar is an electric commercial vehicle manufacturer that has benefited enormously from the US government’s injection of economic stimulus funding into its domestic electric vehicle industry.
The company, which has its head office outside of Chicago, received $39.2m and a personal visit by President Obama in 2009, to support its efforts bringing the eStar concept to reality.
“For businesses, municipalities and other organizations that demonstrate their environmental commitment, the eStar is a smart option,” said
Mark Aubry, vice president of sales and marketing for electric vehicles at Navistar, said the eStar was a “smart option” for businesses and municipalities.
He said: “The eStar is enabling responsible customers who strive to have a positive impact on the environment through energy efficiency.”
