Only expecting to break even this year, Austria (Osterreichische) Post has declared earnings of more than Euro17 million, a product of modernisation and reorganisation. The post have devolved itself of its post bus service in the last year and has also implemented a staff overhaul which will see a total of 6,000 jobs cut. Osterreichische Posts year 2000 results show a consolidated turnover of Euro1.54 billion and earnings before interest and tax of Euro17.4 million.
Some Euro109 million has been spent during the last financial year to improve Osterreichische Posts competitive capacity including the creations of logistics centres and a modernisation and networking of post offices. Staff levels were cut by almost 2,000 during the year, which the post has put down to the transformation of the post bus service, as well as its modernisation plans.
The second phase of modernisation saw the reorganisation of the structure of Austria’s sub-post offices, which began in 1999 and is now countrywide. Post offices have been reorganised into service, nodal, and basic post offices with nodal offices controlling the basic offices.
