Government Backs Beijing Postal Strategy

Sep 26, 2001 (The Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX)– The
Federal Governments has declared its support for the implementation of the
Beijing postal strategy by African countries. Minister of State for Communications, Alhaji Haruna Elewa, who dropped the
unit at the opening of the annual “conference of Postal Administrators of West
African sub-region in Abuja Monday charged African countries to in the spirit
of the strategy ensure the provision of a universal postal service. This service he said, should be able to allow customers to send and receive
goods and manages from one point to any point in the world. Accordingly, he urged member countries to strengthen the quality of the
interautumnal postal network and provide customers with reliable, secure and
efficient postal service. The minister said Nigeria was determined to increase the effectiveness of the
international postal network which was capable of providing customers with
affordable postal services. Besides, he assured that the local postal administration was posited with
government support, to respond effectively, through improved market knowledge
and product development to meet the needs and expectations of postal
customers. Other areas the federal government wants African countries to initiate
concerted effort in order to boost postal services include ennoblement of
postal customers to draw maximum benefits from technological, economic and
regulatory changes in the postal environment through the process of postal
reforms and development. He therefore, urged the conference to broaden cooperation and interaction
among the stakeholders the postal industry. Earlier the chairman of NIPOST board of directors, Chief Samuel Nwangaga said
the password on the lip of every postal administrator was “postal reforms or
restructuring and “customer satisfaction,” adding that postal authorities
especially those of developing countries have to wrestle with this slogans by
introducing reforms. “Postal authorities, particularly in developing countries have been forced to
wrestle the with the issue of postal reforms as an important option for their
