Hub modernisation at DPD Germany
The German arm of DPD is to invest EUR 5m to “significantly” improve efficiency at one of its depots. The company is using the funds to modernise its automatic parcel sorting system at its hub in Heilbronn.
The depot handles up to 100,000 packages per day, with many of them coming from Würth-Gruppe. The ‘distributor of fixing and assembly materials’, based in Künzelsau, is one of DPD’s biggest customers.
The investment and the associated shift to a line-master system, will allow packets to be automatically sorted faster than before.
Capacity will increase from 9,000 packages an hour to 12,000 packages per hour.
Branch manager Heiko Köger: “We offer our local customers a better service, because this leads to later departure times of these lines and thus to better run times without further intermediate handling.”
The hub – which is 7,500 square metres in size –has 100 employees, with an additional 100 delivery drivers.
Across the group, DPD manages around 2m packages a day, describing itself as ”one of the leading international parcel and express service providers”.
“The DPD network is the most efficient road network in Europe and extends to the world’s major economies,” a company statement said.
