Correos releases “milestone” report

Spanish postal operator Correos has released its first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. The 2010 study is the first specific social and environmental report prepared by the postal group, exploring its CSR achievements.

Company secretary Jesus Moreno Vivas said the report marks “a milestone” for Correos.

“This report has put our social and environmental commitment into numbers, but the real value of CSR is setting an example to society, as we are a public company,” he said.

In 2010, Correos continued with its specific social and environmental programmes, many of which have being set-up during the last decade in partnership with other national and international agencies.

In terms of the environment, the operator has been working towards fulfilling the objectives set out in the group’s Excellence Plan 2008-2010, and Environmental Action Plan 2010-2012 – which maps out Correos’ environmental objectives, including those relating to energy efficiency and carbon emissions.

Correos reduced its emissions by 5% during 2010, as it works towards the ‘20% reduction by 2020’ target set by the postal industry during the international climate summit in Copenhagen. The reduction is the equivalent to about 6,628 tons of CO2. The operator also achieved a reduction of close to 5% for energy consumption.

During 2010, Correos also carried out route optimisation initiatives, as well as adding 200 electric vehicles to its fleet. The company also gave 1,866 hours of environmental training to staff.

Last year, Correos signed an agreement with WWF Spain to fund reforestation projects, including a 16-hectre area in Galicia, dubbed the ‘Bosque de Correos’, or the ‘Post Forest’.

The first CSR Report also details the efforts made by the group to provide a healthy working environment that “respects the rights” of more than 63,000 employees – gaining recognition for its efforts along the way.
