DHL Express adds direct flights between US and Panama

DHL Express has launched new direct flights between its Cincinnati hub, in the United States, and Panama. The Deutsche Post DHL subsidiary has added a 30-ton capacity Boeing 757 to connect DHL Cincinnati (CVG) and its hub in Panama City (PTY).

The flights started up last week and should bring a one-day improvement in transit times between destinations in the US, Canada, Asia and the Caribbean Islands to Panama, and from Panama to all DHL destinations across the globe.

The company said documents and small shipments can now be delivered from the US to Panama in a single day.

Stephen Fenwick, CEO for DHL Express Americas, said Panama was gaining attention as an “economic powerhouse” in Latin America and a major logistics centre.

“Connecting our customers along this key trade route with expedited flights give businesses valuable access to and from this growing market, and the fastest growing economy in Latin America,” Fenwick said.

Panama’s economy is currently growing by 6.2%, and is expected to benefit significantly from the current Panama Canal expansion project set to be completed in 2014.

The country is also in the process of negotiated a Free Trade Agreement with the United States, which the White House has said it wants to see ratified by the end of this year.

DHL, which has been operating in Latin America since 1977, operates the industry’s largest hub in Central America at Tocumen International Airport, Panama City.
