French Post Office reveals financial ambitions

The French post office (La Poste) has unveiled plans to expand its range of financial services. In an internal document intended for its staff, La Poste claims, for example, that it is considering credit facilities for its customers – an initiative which would involve the creation of a postal bank. The organisation deplores the fact that, at present, it can only offer its customers housing loans.

The La Poste document goes on to say that, as a result of these limitations, it is excluded from commercial lending and from the most important areas of the market for loans to individuals, including personal loans and student loans. Moreover, it stresses that housing loans are essential for its development as this type of financial service is the best means of gaining customer loyalty. Meanwhile, the French post office continues to discuss these same issues with the government as it renegotiates its contract.
