DHL Parcel Germany to expand Greven logistics centre
DHL Parcel Germany is set to more than double the size of its logistics centre in Greven, after winning a key contract with mail order firm HSE24 (Home Shopping Europe). The company is extending an existing logistics deal with the Munich based TV and online consumer goods retailer, and also takes over a warehousing contract that had been outsourced to a competitor back in 2010.
As a result, it plans to expand the facility in north-west Germany to create a central warehouse from which the entire goods management and logistics chains will be operated, and parcels fed directly into the adjacent parcel centre via a conveyer bridge.
Once construction is complete by October 2013, DHL said its Greven location will be able to process about 84,000 orders a day, including space to store more than 250,000 garments on hangers.
Katja Herbst, board member responsible for sales at DHL Parcel Germany, said: “The combination of the expansion of the logistics centre in Greven, and the direct access to the already-modernised parcel centre, places us is a position to offer an integrated solution that is ideally suited for the particular requirements of the teleshopping business, as well as for HSE24’s growth strategy.”
DHL Parcel Germany has been moving to consolidate all of its home delivery services under one roof since the beginning of the year, so that ecommerce and mail order companies can obtain everything from fulfilment, procurement, quality control, warehousing, picking and packing, delivery and returns services all from the same place.
The HSE24 contract will require the Greven site to provide handling capacity for a wide range of consumer goods, with the addition of more pallet storage space and a secure area for high-value goods like jewelry, said DHL.
The range of goods also mean a complex system of supply, picking and packing is needed.
Koen Verbrugge, the head of service and operations at HSE24, said: “Our priority is delivering to our customers quickly and dependably. It requires efficient order processing as well as provisions for the specific needs of our type of business. DHL’s logistics concept combines the best of automated and manual logistics processes.”
