Scotland’s First Minister visits education centre at Royal Mail site
Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond visited a Royal Mail plant in Glasgow on Friday to confirm that government funding for worker education programmes will continue. Salmond visited workers at the Glasgow Mail Centre in Springburn to see the site’s “Key to Learn” Learning Centre and present certificates to staff who had completed courses at the centre.
As he visited the facility, he said jobs were his government’s “top priority”, pledging to continue supporting investment in training and lifelong learning.
“Scottish Union Learning is supported financially by the Scottish Government, and I’m proud of what our efforts are helping to achieve,” said the First Minister.
“But, of course, the real credit lies with the staff here who work so hard to develop not only their own personal potential, but the effectiveness of their teams.”

The Learning Centre opened at the Springburn site back in 2009, offering education and training opportunities for all of the 1,100 mail centre employees.
Nearly half the site’s staff have now used the centre since it opened, taking courses ranging from computing skills to foreign languages.
The Communication Workers Union said it was pleased the First Minister had recognised the “hard work, effort and achievements” of the centre and mail staff.
John Brown, the CWU regional secretary for Scotland, said: “We are happy to learn that continued funding for Scottish Union Learning over the forthcoming year has been confirmed by the Scottish Government.
“We look forward to receiving the Scottish Government’s confirmation that this funding for union learning will be extended to cover future years., allowing CWU Scotland and Royal Mail in Scotland to continue to fully engage our members and Royal Mail on the future skills agenda,” added Brown.
