Deutsche Post plans new logistics system

Deutsche Post, the German post and logistics group, is planning a new logistics system called Packstation that will be introduced throughout Germany this year. The system will enable the receivers of parcels to fetch their packages themselves 24 hours per day. Prior to collection, SMS or e-mail messages will be sent out to inform the addressees that a package is waiting for them, and they can then pick up the parcels from automatic machines.

Trials for the new system have been successful among business customers in Dortmund and Mainz, and tests will now be carried out for household customers in those areas. If the system works, it will be extended to 85 towns throughout the country.
