Brazil Post hitting quality targets, plans to hire 13,700 more workers
Brazil’s Post and Telegraph Company (ECT) has seen hit seven of its eight targets for service quality during the first two months of the year, it said today. The state-run postal service had new service targets set by the government in December.
Today, ECT said during January and February it delivered 96.1% of basic and recorded letters within five working days – against its 95% target level.
It surpassed its 90% goal for the delivery of letters posted and delivered in the same state within two working days, achieving a 95.7% rate.
The company also beat the non-urgent target of 90% of items to be delivered within four days, achieving a 94.8% rate. For the delivery of printed materials, ECT said it delivered 98.7% within the four-day period statewide and nationally, more than eight points above its target.
The one target that was not achieved was its telegram delivery target, with January and February seeing a 94.33% average for telegrams delivered within four hours, against a 95% target. ECT said it had had issues with the electronic transmission of large numbers of telegram messages concurrently, and was working to correct the problem.
Wagner Pinheiro de Oliveira, the ECT president, said he expected the company’s performances to improve even further going forward.
He said: “To achieve these results, we needed the professionalism of the company’s employees to strive to achieve and exceed targets even as improvements were made in 2011 to the infrastructure, personnel management and technology.”
Improving service
The ECT president said the company was investing BRL 847m ($464m USD) in improving the network this year, which would continue an upward swing in quality performance.
Last week, the ECT board of directors approved a fresh recruitment campaign to hire 13,727 new workers for all areas of the company, particularly in operations, mail sorting and in retail positions within post offices.
The company has now lodged a request with the government to allow the hiring process to proceed. ECT said once approved, it will be able to immediately hire applicants already on its approved reserve list from last year’s recruitment campaign.
New recruiting processes will be launched in areas of the country where there are no candidates already in reserve.
ECT currently has around 115,000 employees.
Last year saw a process to hire 9,190 new workers, added to a work force that had been depleted because workers retiring or leaving the company could not be replaced because of problems in ECT’s recruitment system under the previous leadership.
During the year, for the 9,190 vacancies, the company received 1.1m applications.
The positions available in the next round of recruitment will have a starting salary of BRL 942.75 ($516 USD) a month and benefits including healthcare coverage, transport expenses and food stamps. To be eligible candidates must have completed high school.
