Brazil Post replacing hundreds of franchise post offices

Brazil’s Post and Telegraph Company (Correios) has said it now has more than 100 franchised post offices up and running under a new retail business model. The 100 operational franchises were selected from candidates found in a tender process that started back in 2009.

The Brazilian government has given Correios until September to re-tender its entire franchised branch network under the new model.

The network currently stands at more than 1,200 branches.

Most of the new operational franchises have been opened in the interior of São Paulo (43) and Minas Gerais (35). Others are located in the municipalities of Bahia, Espirito Santo, Goias, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Para, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and the São Paulo metropolitan region.

Correios said it was expecting a further 231 units that have already been tendered to begin operations in the coming months.

More franchise post offices are coming along behind, after Correios issued a tender late last year for 818 post office franchises. The state-run company said of this total about 72% are in the process of being awarded contracts.

“The success achieved so far reflects the transparency and seriousness of the work conducted by mail in the new franchise model,” said the vice president of Network and Customer Relationship, Gloria Guimaraes.
