GLS opens fifth Eco-Depot in Germany
European parcel delivery company GLS Group has opened its 11th “Eco-Depot”, in Geretsried, near Munich in southern Germany. The new EUR 8m facility has the capacity to handle up to 30,000 items a day, and will replace a depot in nearby Sauerlach to service communities south of Munich, including German ski resorts.
Located in an industrial area of Geretsried-Gelting, the 28,000 square metre site includes a 3,300 square metre transfer station with six long-distance transport bays and 73 gates.
It also includes a powerful conveyor system and state-of-the-art security system to ensure a smooth processing of packages.
The company said its hall and site have been designed to provide “plenty of room” for future expansion.
Klaus Conrad, Managing Director of GLS Germany, said: “We are not only extending the capacity, but are also creating a new package distribution center and 30 additional jobs. In this region, all signs point to growth.”
As with its other Eco-Depots, GLS says its new facility has been designed in line with the company’s environmental initiative, Think Green, to minimise its carbon footprint. The site’s primary heat source will be a heat pump generating renewable energy, which GLS said would cut carbon emissions and also operating costs.
The company’s fifth Eco Depot in Germany, the Geretsried facility also includes rainwater harvesting systems and uses recyclable materials throughout.
Amsterdam-based General Logistics Systems B.V. operates in 42 European countries, transporting about 363m packages a year via 38 hubs and 642 depots.
