PostNL opens upgraded parcel depot in Den Bosch
PostNL Parcels has opened a new depot in Den Bosch as part of a EUR 240m investment in logistics infrastructure designed to cope with a sharp increase in parcel volumes. The new facility is the fourth depot to open as part of the new logistics infrastructure being set up by PostNL’s parcel division.
The Dutch postal service said the facility creates 250 jobs in the region.
Strong growth in e-commerce has been a particular driver for increasing parcel volumes, prompting the investment in logistics infrastructure, with PostNL Parcels’ current four sorting centres and 37 distribution centres being replaced by 18 sorting and distribution depots.
The aim is to have all new sites in operation by 2015, providing PostNL with a scalable logistics network that can handle 140 million parcels a year. The people employed in the current logistics network will transfer to the new infrastructure.
New sites have already opened in Utrecht, Elst and Waddinxveen, and over the next few years PostNL will open 14 such sites across the Netherlands.
Gerrit Mastenbroek, Managing Director of PostNL Parcels says: “We are delighted with the launch of our fourth ‘new-style’ depot. The capacity of this depot is essential if we are to meet the ever-increasing demand for parcel delivery and to improve the already excellent quality.
“Last year, Dutch consumers placed more than 77 million orders online, worth almost EUR 9 billion. The new logistics infrastructure offers us and our customers a host of benefits when it comes to time, quality and efficiency. It enables them to use services like Checkpay, PostNL Checkout and Pakjegemak, all of which help meet their urgent needs and wishes: order it today, get it delivered tomorrow,” added Mastenbroek.
PostNL currently processes about 106 million parcels each year, and delivers to addresses in the Benelux, Germany, the UK and Italy.
