Deutsche Post expanding vocational training, hiring of apprentices

Deutsche Post DHL has said it is increasing the number of its vocational training positions to 2,100 this year, more than 100 more than last year. The company said it is also increasing the number of full-time jobs it offers its apprentices on its vocational training programme.

This year, the company has offered around 1,300 of its apprentices full-time jobs, about 25% more than in 2011.

Deutsche Post DHL has nearly 20 different programmes for graduates to obtain practical experience for up to three years working on site at the company, while also attending vocational school.

Most programmes are offered in the Mail division, where around 1,400 positions are available, and this year more than 1,000 will be hired full-time, a third more than last year.

But, apprenticeships are also available in freight forwarding, administration, real estate, engineering and warehouse logistics.

The Group as a whole has now given nearly 5,000 full-time positions to young people on its vocational training programmes over the past five years.

Qualified

Angela Titzrath, the board member at Deutsche Post DHL responsible for personnel, said apprenticeships meant a promising start to a young person’s career – and skilled recruits for her company.

“We need qualified young people. And young people need opportunity,” she said.

Deutsche Post DHL began a new programme this year training new professional vehicle operators for the first time.

About 50 people will be trained in urban and inter-city goods transport, fleet management and logistics centre functions on the new course.

While most of the apprenticeships are available in the Mail business, Deutsche Post said its DHL divisions and its Global Business Services unit will offer more than 280 full-time positions to trainees this year, also an increase on 2011.

Jurgen Gerdes, board member for Mail at Deutsche Post, said: With the industry’s best working conditions and career prospects such as the unprecedented Generations Pact, our young people are motivated and provide outstanding services to our customers on a sustained basis.”
