Mutual insurers mobilise against La Poste

GEMA, the French association of mutual insurance companies, yesterday joined in with the ferocious opposition expressed by the FFSA, another association of insurance companies, to the supposed intention of French post office La Poste to sell car and home-contents insurance.

This comes as the state is negotiating with La Poste the content of the state planning contract which is to be concluded by the end of the year. The previous one (1998-2001) was extended for a year. Legally, La Poste has been able to sell general insurance since 1990, but the fierce opposition of traditional insurers has, so far, dissuaded the Paris finance ministry from consecrating this authorisation within a state planning contract.
