EU Challenges Belgian Post's e-Mail Monopoly

The European Union Commission has launched legal proceedings against the monopoly of Belgium’s Post Office over registered email, reports de Tijd. The move follows a complaint from Hypertrust, a technology firm based in Leuven that wants to provide such services. A 1999 Belgian law gives De Post a monopoly on registered emails for administrative and legal procedures. But the Commission contends there is no justification for excluding competition from this market on security grounds
