DPD begins construction on €11m parcel centre in southern Germany
Parcel carrier DPD is building a new EUR 11m distribution centre in southern Germany in order to get closer to its customers in the region. The company began construction on the facility last week at the Waldeck Business Park in Dinkelsbühl, between Stuttgart and Nuremberg in Bavaria.
The 18,000 square meter facility on a 23,100 sq m site should be opened in early 2015, with around 90 employees based there.
Milad Zadeh, the DPD project manager, said the location for the new facility was ideal for the delivery area.
“Closeness to the customer is an important competitive factor for us,” he said. “Our new distribution centre in Dinkelsbühl will put us in the position to offer our customers in the region even better service.”
The bulk of the new facility will be a parcel-sorting operation, which once operational will be capable of sorting up to 16,500 parcels each day.
The new facility will be capable of sorting 7,500 parcels each hour
About 990m of conveyor belt will be installed, with the initial phase of the system sorting 5,500 parcels per hour, and 7,500 per hour after the second phase.
A total of 65 delivery drivers and 30 depot staff will be working at the facility each day, serving customers in Aalen, Feuchtwangen, Crailsheim and Ellwangen, all of whom were previously served by DPD depots in Nuremberg, Heilbronn and Neu-Ulm.
The new facility will bring the number of DPD depots in Germany to 76. Across the country, the company majority owned by La Poste’s GeoPost Group has a workforce of about 7,500 and a fleet of 7,000 delivery vehicles.
The firm ships more than 2.5m parcels each day within its international network.
