DHL Express expands Japanese network with retail alliance
DHL Express is set to open 23 new international package drop-off outlets across Japan, to expand its network there by more than 15%. The company is partnering with printing retail chain ACCEA to provide the new DHL Service Points in ACCEA stores in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka and Okayama.
16 of the new service points will be in Tokyo, and along with one of four new service points opening in Osaka, these will open 24 hours a day.
DHL said the new openings will bring its total number of DHL Service Points to 173, which it claims is the largest service network in Japan within the express industry.
The company said it plans to increase its presence further and improve convenience by opening service points in ACCEA stores at terminal stations and in business areas of major cities across Japan.
In particular the move targets growth among small businesses, through the DHL Express Easy service, which offers a “simplified” international shipping experience for SMEs and new shippers sending items ranging from a 500g envelope to a 25kg box.
Taketo Yamakawa, the DHL Japan representative director and president, said of the partnership with ACCEA: “To help SMEs and proprietors in pursuing business growth internationally, DHL is always on the look-out for ways to support and offer easy and convenient shipping services at strategic locations.
“As the leader in international express services, DHL will continue to expand our network capabilities and enhance the overall customer experience.”
For ACCEA, the partnership with DHL means providing a new added-value service for its customers, overseas shipment.
Tadashi Yoshida, the ACCEA president and chief executive, said: “The opening of these 23 locations can offer convenience to customers who did not used to have DHL Service Points nearby. By increasing our stores that can handle DHL’s services, I hope that further business growth can be realised for two companies.”
