FedEx web site offers customers new option

FedEx Corp., the largest overnight shipping company, introduced an Internet service to calculate foreign taxes, duties and other charges to try to lure more international shipments.

The service will let shippers avoid estimating the charges manually for 42 countries, spokesman Jesse Bunn said. Customers who don’t have to ship through FedEx pay $5 for each transaction by using the option at fedex.com, the company said. Discounts are offered for frequent shipments.

The company declined to provide revenue projections for the service, which doesn’t offer an accuracy guarantee and is available only from the FedEx U.S. Web site. The service lets FedEx provide shippers with data that were available only through customs brokerage companies or freight forwarders.

FedEx rose $1.11 to $55.45. The Memphis-based company’s stock has climbed 40 percent during the past year.
