DPD Germany opens €11m parcel sorting centre in Bavaria
DPD Germany has started operations at a new parcel sorting facility in southern Germany after an EUR 11m investment. The centre at Dinkelsbühl in Bavaria began deliveries on Wednesday to serve Dinkelsbühl, Feuchtwangen, Ansbach, Crailsheim, Ellwangen, Aalen and Nördlingen.
DPD, majority-owned by La Poste’s international parcel-express business GeoPost Group, said the 23,100 square metre facility was its 76th location in Germany.
The facility can process up to 5,500 parcels an hour, with initial expectations that it will handle a volume of more than 16,000 parcels per day. A second phase is expected to take the capacity up to 7,500 parcels per hour.
“Over recent months our committed team has prepared the start of our new depot with the greatest attention to detail,” said depot chief Milad Zadeh.
“We now look forward to our daily work on behalf of shippers and consignees in the region around Dinkelsbühl, where we already feel very much at home.”
DPD is currently pushing to double its market share in the German e-commerce delivery business to 15% by 2020, by using technology to make parcel delivery more convenient for consumers shopping online.

The company has been building up its infrastructure to cope with demand, announcing last month that it will build a EUR 50m facility near Dortmund.
The new facility at Dinkelsbühl will support existing depots in Nuremberg, Heilbronn and Neu-UIm with a workforce of about 90, and 65 delivery vehicles.
The company said its staff began moving into the new centre during the autumn, with the first real sorting operations starting on 5th January.
