Amazon India launches Sunday service

Amazon India has announced that it will now be delivering products on Sunday to customers in 100 cities across India. The company will also treat Sunday as a working day when computing delivery agreements with customers.

Amazon said that it will continue the roll-out of the Sunday service to other cities for all FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) products.

Samuel Thomas, Director Transportation & Logistics, Amazon India, commented, “With our Sunday delivery promise, customers now have the benefit of getting uninterrupted deliveries of their orders through the week. We are very proud to be the first ones in India to offer Sunday Delivery at this scale. This capability now allows us to make faster and more accurate promises to customers.”

While Thomas may be correct in saying that Amazon is the first in India to offer Sunday Delivery at this scale, the company was not the first out of the blocks: Flipkart started offering a limited Sunday service in some Indian cities in 2014.

Amazon has been ramping up its activities in India significantly, as it looks to compete with aggressive local players such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. Amazon launched its pickup services in 2014 and is now reported to have more than 800 pickup points across 45 Indian cities.

On 8 April, meanwhile, Amazon announced the opening of a Fulfilment Centre (FC), spread over 280,000 square feet near Kottur, on the outskirts of Hyderabad in the state of Telangana.

The centre, which marks Amazon India’s largest investment in infrastructure in any single state to date, will be operational from next month.

According to a company statement: “With the opening of the new FC in Telangana, Amazon will have 11 FCs operational across nine states in India covering a total of over one million square feet space with a storage capacity of over 2.5 million cubic feet.”
