US postal workers union holding “Day of Action” on Thursday
Members of the American Postal Workers Union will be holding a “National Day of Action” on Thursday, in protest at cutbacks in hours at local post offices. The APWU is arguing that maintaining longer post office hours will not only give their members more opportunity to work, but will also provide a better service for the public.
“U.S. Postal Service executives and the agency’s board of governors are using a manufactured financial crisis to justify their strategy of reducing service, delaying mail delivery, and dismantling a great national treasure,” said Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union.
In a statement posted on its website, the APWU said that there will be “more than 100 locals scheduled events at postal facilities in 85 cities across 33 states and Puerto Rico, organized around the theme, ‘I Stand with Postal Workers’”.
The Day of Action will be taking place just one week before the APWU’s Collective Bargain Agreement with USPS is set to expire.
The APWU represents mail sorters, counter clerks and other postal employees, but not letter carriers who have their own union, the NALC.
