Thailand Post requiring parcel senders to show ID
In a new measure reportedly introduced to help crack down on drug smuggling, people planning to send parcels via Thailand Post’s post offices will have to show their proof of identity. Mrs Waraporn Chaitiamwong, manager of organizational communications for Thailand Post, has been quoted as saying that the new ruling came into effect yesterday (2 June).
Parcel senders will have to present either their ID cards or, if they are foreigners, their passports – and the official at the post counter will record their details.
Drug smuggling is a capital offence in Thailand – although in practice may foreigners have had their sentences commuted to imprisonment.
