Strike hits Irish postal service

Ireland’s postal service will shut down later today (2 October) as a result of a strike by staff contracted to maintain sorting equipment. The striking staff are employed by the contractor IO Systems to maintain equipment in An Post centres in Dublin, Cork, Portlaoise and Athlone.

In a statement sent to Post&Parcel today, An Post said that it was advising customers not to post mail items until further notice, as the operator will be “unable to process mail for delivery to customers”.

An Post added that it “urges the parties involved” – IO Systems and the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) – “to resolve their differences through the normal industrial relations procedures”.

The An Post statement said that Post Office retail services are not affected by the strike.
