Nigeria needs 4000 courier companies

The Head, Courier Regulatory Department (CRD) of NIPOST, Mr. Simon Emeje, has said that Nigeria needs about 4000 courier companies to cope with the volume of business in the courier services sector of the economy.

Emeje, who is the Senior Assistant Postmaster-General, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that at present, only 50 courier companies were officially registered to operate in the country as at May this year and that the number was grossly inadequate.

He said that Lagos alone could accommodate 1000 courier companies and that the rest of the country could take up the balance.

Emeje said that the CRD was aware of the existence of unregistered courier companies operating in the country and that his department had embarked on a campaign to sanitise the sector and get the qualified courier companies registered and seal up the illegal companies.

According to him, the sanitisation programme of the CRD has yielded some dividends as 11 unregistered companies had been sealed up and that some of the companies have taken steps to register their companies with the department.

He said that the courier business was very lucrative and that the business could be started with about N4 million.

Emeje advised prospective dealers in the business to approach the department for detailed information on operations of the business and those operating illegal courier offices to either close down or take steps to formalise their operations.

He disclosed that the sanitisation programme in the sector was nationwide and that it would soon be taken beyond Lagos where it is being executed.
